North Korean AKM - this is often mistaken for an AK47 bayonet at first glance. The scabbard is straight metal with a permanently attached web hanger with a leather strap that goes around the knife handle like an AK47 scabbard. No wire cutter. The handle of the bayonet is full tang with resin scales like an AK47 handle but, there are no ears to go around the barrel and instead there is a bayonet lug slot and lock button like on any other AKM bayonet. The blade is Bowie style and has a blood groove on each side which are not at the same point in the width of the blade. There is no wire cutter provision.

KM 87 East German version made in very limited numbers with tool kit in handle
East German KM87 - blade is classic clip point (Bowie style) with slot for use as a wire cutter. Blade also has a clinometer etched on one side and a linear scale etched on the other side. Handle is black resin with palm swell and finger grooves and a squared off metal butt cap which unscrews to reveal a compartment containing a small stash of survival items. The butt cap has a whole for a wrist strap which is basically a length of black paracord. The scabbard is black resin with wire cutter attachment. The hanger is riveted to the scabbard and is made of grey Nylon web. It has a black leather strap and black steel loop closure for the belt loop that allows the loop to be opened up to reveal a signaling mirror. The strap that goes around the handle is also gray Nylon web and closes with Velcro. There were only about 2500 of these made before the fall of the wall.
East German KM 87 Bayonet - one of the rarest issued AK bayonets is the East german Kampfmesser (KM) 87 - This bayonet was developed in 1987 for use with the East German MPiAK74 . There were only 2000 of these bayonets produced before the "fall of the wall" and the collapse of East germany. These were designed as a survival knife as well as a bayonet. The pommel unscrews and reveals a small plastic capsule - inside capsule is one each 3mm, 4mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm diameter split lead shot weights, two 10 mm long fish hooks, two 15 mm long fish hooks, two red over green flare matches, one green over red tip flare match, three iodine water purification tablets, two 40 mm long straight sewing needles and one sterile suture kit. The lid of the capsule contains a plastic magnifying lens and under a round leather plug in pommel there is monofilament fishing line. The blade itself has a protractor on one side and 5 cm scale on the other. The belt loop contains a piece of polished steel signaling mirror. It also comes with a small instruction booklet.

1980s Indian INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) bayonet

The INSAS is part of the Kalashnikov family - as such it's covered in the definitive book, "Kalashnikov Bayonets - The Collector's Guide to Bayonets for the AK & its Variations" by Martin D. Ivie.

No Commonwealth, Indian or AK series collection is complete without one. These bayonets are very rare beasts, and are not currently available in bulk anywhere on the surplus market, as they are still Indian current issue.

The INSAS is an interesting bayonet - it looks like the product of an unholy union between a Chinese AK, a British L1A3 and an American M9.

Its blade, pommel end, crosspiece and scabbard tip are acid-blackened, with the rest finished in a thick layer of orangey-brown insulating plastic paint. The overall quality of workmanship is very low, even by Indian standards, but this is how they left the factory! It's got a tool scabbard, with wire cutter, screwdriver and beer-bottle opener! However, if you want to play with these tools, be aware that the blackened finish is very fragile, as is the paint.

No maker's mark is in evidence. There is no belt hanger - this bayonet is factory fresh, part of a production overrun - the hangers were from a different manufacturer and meant to be added later.
