We Review another Private AK47 collection
January 2007

We were invited to check out yet another impressive AK47 collection. While we took pics we talked for a while about AKs with a long time collector. Here are some pictures from the visit with some notes about what the rifles are and why they were chosen.

We were invited to check out yet another impressive AK47 collection. While we took pics we talked for a while about AKs with a long time collector. Here are some pictures from the visit with some notes about what the rifles are and why they were chosen

The collection includes:

Russian AK47
Real Russian kit built on a very early Bulgarian receiver

Starting big with a very old AK47. A milled Russian AK47. This one is rebuilt in semi-auto on a Bulgarian milled receiver. Marked Arsenal, but imported to KY, long before Arsenal was started in Las Vegas, NV.

Yugoslav M90 in .308
A classic Yugoslav AK

This is an original Yugoslavian AK47 M90 in .308 (7.62x51) imported by Mitchell Arms. This is the pride of the collection as it's the newest acquisition. The original (and very unique) thumbhole stock was replaced with a Yugoslav stock set. Finally a Yugoslav scope was found and added to the rifle. It's now a very complete example of a Yugoslav AK

The adjustable gas system, bolt hold open safety, and scope mount are a few of the more obvious differences with the Yugoslav AKs

Romanian RPK a larger version of the AK47. This is an improved version with rear mounted bi-pod, AK100 style side folding stock and carry handle. This one is also fitted with Tapco handguards and pistol grips.

Maadi RPK
An Egyptian RPK style AKM converted to look authentic

A Maadi RPK style AK47 was imported with a thumbhole stock. This example has two unique markings on the receiver and rear sight block.

The internals were updated to US made parts and the thumbhole stock was replaced with this Romanian RPK stock set. Some trimming was required as the Romanian RPK is a true RPK with heavy (thicker) barrel

This Yugo RPK was built by Horn's Custom Rifles also on a NoDak receiver. It's all original minus the US parts including it's unique muzzle break.

Chinese NMD83
A Chinese RPK style AK with high quality US wooden furniture

This Chinese RPK style AK47 had it's thumbhole stock replaced with US made AK47 furniture This hand picked stock set by Ironwood Designs has a nice fiddle neck pattern in the walnut grain

It's difficult to get on film but this stock set is almost transparent, the pattern in the grain looks almost like a hologram. Very cool

This Romanian barrel was used to create an AMD style carbine. The front sight post was removed and the barrel was cut down, the sight post was replaced and the custom muzzle break was pinned into place. A German side folder was added and a US pistol grip and front handguards with built in rail for the vertical front grip. A US made ventilated handguard completes the tactical look of this compact and good shooting custom AKM

SAR-1
A standard imported AKM with a simple modification that makes it look great

This ordinary SAR-1 looks great with the Russian red dyed US made furniture On first glance this looks like a Russian AKM, Stock by Ironwood Designs and finished by Impact Global Arms in Tucson, AZ

This Norinco underfolder was imported almost 30 years ago. At the time it was a costly special order. It's been used for many years as a recreational shooter as well as in officially capacity.

Chinese Type 56 AK47
A classic AK47 with underfolding spike bayonet

A great example, and my favorite of the group.
A very early import to the US, This AK47 was built to go into military service, but was imported to the US.

Underfolder spike bayonet is unique. Yellow chinese wood. Ribless Chinese magazine

This AKMS was built by Horn's Custom Rifles on an Arsenal USA receiver. This rifle is pictured with a Polish AK74 bayonet

Egyptian MISR Underfolder
A cool underfolder conversion to an Egyptian AKM

This is a Egyptian MISR converted to an underfolder by C&T here in Tucson, AZ. The MISR is a ban style AKM well made but no bayo lug, turned down threads on barrel and thumbhole stock.

This MISR has it's internals replaced for 922r compliance, then the thumbhole stock was replaced with the Bulgarian underfolder

This Romanian import was converted to an assault configuration with US pistol grip and handguards, vertical front gripand a German side folding stock.

Albanian SKS
A unique SKS

This is a cool example of an SKS with a unique bayonet, magazine and furniture This one is an accurate shooter as well

This Romanian import was converted to an assault configuration with US pistol grip and handguards, vertical front gripand a German side folding stock.
