AK47
modifications by Southwest Shooting Authority
I
had a chance to see and photograph some AK47s that have
been highly modified by Southwest
Shooting Authority in Farmington, New Mexico.
THese started out as WASR-10 Ak
47s but have had extensive mods such as moving the charging
handle to the other side, using an SKS gas piston as the
charging handle, altered magazine release
and safety and many more smaller mods to make these AK
47s more user friendly. Of course being painted
green is another big plus in my book.

From
a few feet away these don't look too much different
from the standard AK47. They have AR15 style stocks
and US made handguards, but the rest of their silhouette
looks like the standard AK47

From
this angle things start to look a bit different.
Notice the slot through the rifle. This was the
first thing that drew my attention to these AK47s

Up
front, Southwest
Shooting Authority changed the slant break to an AR15 A2
break, US made handguards and an added sling swivel They
also added a rail for mounting a light

The
receivers are quite modified on this green version.
The original charging handle was ground down and
the safety was cut to act as a bolt hold open. Also
the magazine catch has been modified to allow the
trigger finger to release the magazine. On the left
side an SKS gas tube was used for the new charging
handle and a slot
was cut in the dust cover for it to travel
in. The optics mount was removed and of course the
gun was duracoated in OD green

This
one is another one in the process of being converted
and hasn't yet been painted. It has it's original
charging handle ground down to engage the safety
as a bolt hold open. This safety was modified to
allow the bolt to be cycled while the safety is engaged.
However this proved not to be a great mod after a
few days of training with it, so this one will continue
to be tested. This one uses a different style modification on
the magazine release
than the other

Here
is one in black with tan furniture. This one has
the optics mount still in place, but also modified
by melting down all it's sharp edges

These
guys don't just build AKs to look cool, they shoot with
them
