Romanian AK47 Rifle Overview
Romania was a member country of the " Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation
and Mutual Assistance". Commonly called the Warsaw Pact which was formed
by the Soviets to oppose the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
Due to Romania being a member of Warsaw Pact the US had a arms embargo
on all Warsaw Pact member nations. After the Warsaw Pact collasped in
1991 ammo was allowed to be imported from Romania. It was not untill
1997 that the arms embargo was completly lifted that rifles were allowed
to be imported from Romania. So there is no such thing as a pre ban Romanian
AK-47 type rifle. Here is a pic of the first Romanian rifle imported.

It is the model WUM-1 chambered in 7.62x39mm. Note the rear of the receiver
has a half moon cut out on the rear of it.
 |
The WUM-1 rifles imported
after the first ones had the standard square back on the receiver.
The 16" barrels
are threaded 14x1mmLH with a muzzle nut screwed on and tack welded.
All have a standard Soviet type side rail for mounting optical
devices riveted on the side of the receiver. |
The first AK rifle chambered for the 5.45x39mm cartridge was imported
in 1997 and was the Romanian model CUR2.
|
It was imported by

|
It has a side rail optics mount and the 16" barrel is unthreaded. A
muzzle nut is pressed on and tack welded. All Romanian rifles chambered
for the 5.45x39mm cartridge are semi auto versions of the AK-74 except
for one part. The front of the front sight is threaded on AK-74 rifles
not the barrel like the AK-47 rifle. The muzzle brake is screwed onto
the front sight. The Romanian 5.45x39mm rifles have a AKM front sight
on them and not a AK-74 front sight.
